Cardi B has unexpectedly found her coronavirus rant as both a viral hit and a chart-ranked remix. The “Bodak Yellow” rapper took to Instagram on March 11 with a home-filmed freakout over COVID-19 – the 27-year-old admitting that a “b*tch is scared” before saying: “Coronavirus! Coronavirus! I’m telling you, sh*t is real!” has now been watched over 21 million times.
Cardi standing in a mesh dress and addressing how the novel virus started out in Wuhan, China (and is now “on motherf*cking tour”) may be clocking up the views over on her Instagram, but something bigger has taken over. A remix by DJ iMarkkeyz now sees the rapper’s words used as a hook, with video editing seeing Elmo footage, plus a mash-up of crowds and dancers.
The viral nature of the remix has proven unprecedented, with Vogue even documenting its success. Cardi herself posted a screenshot of the iTunes charts showing the remix sitting at number 96 – not bad for a track that’s a loop of Cardi freaking out and a bunch of low-res video additions.
Following the video’s success, Cardi made headlines for implying that she wished to get paid for it.
“The fact this damn corona virus song is charting on iTunes ….Hold on ..let me hit the Dj up and Atlantic so I can’t get my damn coins.”
Fans had, however, quickly pressured the “Dinero” actress to donate any proceeds towards the relief effort – the death toll for COVID-19 hit 10,000 yesterday, with the virus now confirmed in all 50 U.S. states.
“if y’all are getting royalties off of this @iamcardib @iMarkkeyz maybe u could consider donating a part of it to food banks or shelters that are probably flooded with new people needing help?” a fan suggested.
Cardi then tweeted to confirm that she would be donating proceeds.
YES !THATS WHAT WE GOING TO DO ! Keep in mind you don’t get your money right away …but even months from now there would be families with financial issues for getting laid off due to the virus .We will Donate !
The celebrity response towards coronavirus has been immense. Yesterday saw 22-year-old reality star and makeup mogul Kylie Jenner beg fans to self-distance, with 27-year-old Miley Cyrus making headlines as she pleaded with fans to stop panic-buying – you don’t need “all the soup,” she wrote. Also joining in to encourage the public to self-distance have been actress Gal Gadot and singer Jennifer Lopez.
Cardi, meanwhile, has been filming husband Offset in his quarantine boredom – the word has now been used by multiple stay-at-home celebs including rapper Chanel West Coast.
