UK looking to mint a coin to commemorate India’s Mahatma Gandhi

Introduction

According to the latest sources, it has been a hot topic, that The Great Britain is looking forward to mint a special coin. The coin minting process is to commemorate India’s independence hero Mahatma Gandhi. The primary reason of this act is the growing interest in recognizing the contributions of people from the black. Not only blacks, but the list also includes Asian and other minority ethnic communities.

Recently, the British Finance Minister Rishi Sinak approached to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee, (RMAC) in this regards. He reached out via letter to pursue recognition of individuals from those communities.  This news came out from the UK Treasury in an emailed statement recently. The UK Treasury also said that “RMAC is currently considering a coin to commemorate Gandhi”.

Some facts about Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi, was born in 1869 in Gujarat (India). He is very well famous for his notable works in South Africa and India. The idol advocated for non-violence throughout his life. He played a major role in India’s struggle for independence against the Great Britain. The entire world respects his notable acts and work. The stories are so widespread, that October 2 (his birthday) is now the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi is called as “Father of the Nation” by the people of India. Thanks to his remarkable work. Unfortunately, a Hindu radical on January 30, 1948, just a few months after the nation’s independence assassinated the poor man.

Recently, some British institutions have begun to re-examine their past. It includes reassessment of history. The list also includes several other factors, such as colonialism and racism. The act was triggered due to the recent event of the death of a black man George Floyd in the United States. Such an incident was so horrific and unfair, carried out by the servants of law, that it ignited a rage of protest and fire in some parts of the world. That event was the starting of protest and demand for justice against other unfair happenings in all around the world.

Consequences

A lot of organizations have started to take initiatives to make investments in helping the needy ones. The needy ones here taken into consideration are the Blacks, Asian and other minority ethnic. BAME is its proper and shortened word. Such initiatives are a tryout to support the racial diversity. Even if the world is seeing the Floyd’s death as an unforgivable act, it won’t be incorrect to say, that due to that guy’s sacrifice, uncountable people are now served justice and support. As a result, George Floyd will always be remembered for his unfair murder.

In his letter to the RMAC, Sunak said members of the BAME communities have made a “profound contribution”. In continuation of that, the committee should consider recognizing it on the UK’s coinage. The RMAC is an independent committee made up of experts. They are the ones, who recommend themes and designs for coins to Britain’s finance minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Now that such a huge nation is considering to recognize the world-famous idol, who knows what happens next. There can also be enough room for the possibilities that the RMAC may mint coins to recognize other famous and underrated people in the future. But for now, it all can be imagined.
