Tensions Rise In Kabul- City On High Alert

Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan is currently witnessing increased tensions due to reactions from Taliban. The reason for high tensions is the heavy presence of U.S military in the capital city.

What was the agreement?

According to the sources, the agreed deadline for the withdrawal of the U.S military was 1 May 2021. This agreement took place in the year 2020 with the trump administration. Under the Trump administration, a deal took place with Taliban in which foreign forces were to be withdrawn from the country by May 1 2021. In return, Taliban would not attack the foreign troops or their bases till then.

But Joe Biden announced the previous month that the forces will be staying in the country even after 1 May. He said that the troops will be withdrawing from Kabul and Afghanistan by September 11, 2021. Although this was an announcement that came from Joe Biden’s side and the new deadline wasn’t discussed by Taliban. It is believed that Joe Biden took this decision after he reviewed the current status and situation of the country.

Consequences

Since the new deadline wasn’t discussed with and agreed by both the parties, things aren’t going as agreed and the expected results are getting horrible. Taliban is reacting over the presence of U.S troops under Joe Biden’s orders irrespective of the agreed deadline. Several military personnel were found in Kabul, which resulted in a high alert in the city. But that’s not the end. Sources say that military patrol and security is being increased in the main cities all over the country.

Current Situation In Kabul

it’s true that the current situations in Kabul and entire country aren’t normal at all. In the recent weeks, violence has surpassed the limits as more than hundred Afghan security force personnel have been killed. On the evening of agreed withdrawal deadline, a major blast took place in eastern Logar that killed over a dozen. The biggest mystery is that there’s no clue about who carried out this blast.

Taliban responded furiously over Biden administration’s move and threated consequences. The negotiation for the extended deadline of the U.S troops’ is under process. Although till May 1, 2021 there are no clear results of the negotiation. No official announcement on the extension has been revealed till date.

Official Announcements On Kabul Situation

Zabihullah Mujahid is the spokesman of Taliban who said on Twitter on Saturday that:

the passing deadline meant this violation in principle has opened the way for (Taliban fighters) to take every counter-action it deems appropriate against the occupying forces.

He continued:

fighters were waiting on the decision of Taliban leadership. Discussions between the U.S. and Taliban and … within the Taliban’s leadership are under way whether to extend that or not.

In return, the US has declared that:

if foreign forces were attacked while carrying out the withdrawal they would defend themselves with all the tools at our disposal.

Final Thoughts

According to the experts, Taliban’s threats must be taken seriously. However, there’s a fairly high chance that Taliban would not attack the U.S military because now they know the new date when the foreign personnel will be leaving Kabul and the country.
