Russia tops in claiming successful trials of COVID-19 vaccine

The “Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University” began clinical trials of the vaccine against Sars-Cov-2. It is commonly known as COVID-19, while more popularly called the Coronavirus too. The vaccine for the virus which causes the Coronavirus disease was produced by Russia’s Gamaleya Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology on June 18, 2020.

A Russian university has claimed that the clinical trials of the world’s first vaccine against the Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) on volunteers have been completed successfully.

In a statement on their website, the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University said that it began clinical trials of the vaccine against Sars-Cov-2, which causes the Coronavirus disease, on June 18, 2020. The vaccine was produced by Russia’s Gamaleya Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, it said.

The Russian ministry of health sanctioned for the trials on June 16, 2020. The university has also said that the first group of volunteers would be discharged on Wednesday and the second on July 20, 2020.

All those who are concerned about how the things went, here is how the clinical trials took place:

  • The first group of 18 healthy volunteers got vaccinated on June 18, 2020.
  • The second group of 20 volunteers received the vaccine on June 23, 2020, at the Practical Research Centre for Interventional Cardiovasology.
  • The volunteers were males and females within the age group of 18 years to 65 years.
  • They receive a lyophilized vaccine or a powder from which a solution is prepared for intramuscular injection.
  • However, some volunteers did report issues including headaches and elevated body temperature. In response to that, the university said that these symptoms were resolved completely within 24 hours after the vaccine administration.
  • All the participants have been kept in single or double wards on campus at the Sechenov University.
  • They will have to spend the next 28 days in isolation after the vaccine injection. This is important in order to protect them from exposure to other infections. After they get discharged they will be further monitored for 6 more months.
  • During the time of isolation, the volunteers were offered psychological support too.
  • The Covid-19 vaccine developed by Gamaleya Institute is also being tested at Burdenko Military Hospital in Moscow (Russia).
  • Additionally, the military hospital is using the liquid form of the medication during the clinical trials.

Currently, the condition of these tests can give hope of a possible COVID-19 vaccine, but still, there is a long way to go. Even if everything goes well, there is a lot of time needed until the cure is available in the market all over the world. In addition to that, making the medicines in reach of common people in every country will again be a challenging task. The condition is expected to be in the worst case scenario in poor contries. However, on the bright side, the scientists believe that if the cure is found and made available to the people at the earliest, it will be a major achievement in the fight against the deadly disease.
