The health officials have warned the US President, Donald Trump, from taking an unproven drug. He, however, said he is taking hydroxychloroquine, the untested medicine to ward off coronavirus.
In an interview with the reporters at the White House, he recently started the malaria medication, hydroxychloroquine.
“I’m taking it for about a week and a half now, and I’m still here, I’m still here,” he said.
Hydroxychloroquine is a medication used to treat malaria. A study on the drug as a treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has started. However, it has not been proven, and the US Food and Drug Administration has warned against taking the drug on self-medication, which might cause “serious and potentially life-threatening heart rhythm problems.”
Furthermore, President Donald Trump was asked on Monday what was his evidence of the drug to ward off coronavirus, and he said: “Here’s my evidence, I get a lot of positive calls about it.”
“You’d be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the frontline workers before you catch it, the frontline workers, many, and many are taking it,” he continued, “I happen to be taking it.”
President Donald Trump, furthered, asked if the White House physician recommended the drug, he said, “I asked him, ‘what do you think?’ He said, ‘well, if you’d like it’, I said, ‘yeah, I’d like it.
Moreover, the president has shown no symptoms of the virus, and his frequent test to the virus has come out to be negative. He has also told the reporters on Monday that hydroxychloroquine “seems to have an impact, and maybe it does, maybe it doesn’t, but if it doesn’t, you’re not going to get sick and die.”
He added: “I’ve heard a lot of good stories, and if it’s not good, I’ll tell you right, I’m not going to get hurt by it.”
President Donald Trump dismissed information of critical side effects from hydroxychloroquine. He said the “only negative” he’s heard about was from one study where the drug was recommended to “people in extraordinarily bad condition, and also affirm that the “very unscientific report” was carried out by “people that aren’t big Trump fans.”
“I get a lot of tremendously positive news on the hydroxy, and I say…what do you have to lose?” the president told reporters. “At some point, I’ll stop.”
President Donald Trump spent weeks using the drug as a potential cure for Covid-19, despite the warnings and medical advice from professionals and experts in his administration.
According to doctors, the drug has the potential to cause side effects, including symptoms of heart failure, suicidal thoughts, and signs of liver disease.
Also, medical associations in the United States have released a joint statement affirming the drug should be used with extreme caution.
Recent studies have shown among COVID-19 patients that hydroxychloroquine has no impact for better or worse on the patients.
