Mahmoud Abbas Flies To Germany For Medical Checkup

According to the latest sources, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas recently flew to Jordan by helicopter. The journey commenced on Monday, April 5, 2021. He will be later heading to Germany for an official visit in order to undergo a health checkup.

More Details On Mahmoud Abbas’ Trip

Unfortunately, there are no official details furnished by the President’s office regarding this trip. The trip wasn’t announced in advance either. However, a Palestinian official said that Abbas will be undergoing a routine health check in Germany. The official was not authorized to comment and so spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Palestinian President is recognized as Mahmoud Abbas, an 85-year-old man. He is well known as a heavy smoker and carries a long history of several heart problems. He recently attended a few public events where there was no sign of his illness. Surprisingly, he received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine the previous month.

Trip History

This isn’t the first time that the president flew to a foreign country for medical purposes. He has previously traveled abroad for medical treatment in recent years. For instance:

  • In 2018, Mahmoud Abbas visited a hospital in the United States after appearing weak in an address to the U.N. Security Council.
  • He underwent an emergency heart procedure in 2016. That’s initiated after suffering exhaustion and chest pains. Fortunately, was given a clean bill of health and quickly discharged from the West Bank hospital.

Mahmoud Abbas’ Throne

There is no successor after Mahmoud Abbas. Surprisingly, there are a number of senior members of his Fatah party that are believed to be eyeing to come in power after him. Abbas took over to become a caretaker president following the death of the iconic Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in 2004.

Abbas was elected to a four-year term the following year but remained in office after his mandate expired. The Palestinians have not held elections since 2006, when the Islamic militant group Hamas won a landslide victory in parliamentary elections.

That ignited a political crisis, culminating in Hamas’ seizure of power in Gaza the following year, leaving Abbas’ authority confined to parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Mahmoud Abbas has decreed parliamentary elections for next month and a presidential election in July. It’s unclear whether the votes will take place, however, due to the longstanding dispute with Hamas and growing schisms within Abbas’ Fatah party that could lead him to call them off.

The Palestinian leader’s popularity has plummeted in recent years as he has failed to make progress in achieving an independent state or mending ties with Hamas, and as he has presided over an increasingly authoritarian Palestinian Authority.

Conclusion

Judging by the previous history of Mahmoud Abbas, we can assume that he’s ill. Since he underwent major treatments, there’s a high chance that he must be feeling unwell, hence the trip commenced so suddenly. Let’s not forget that he also took the COVID-19 vaccine shot recently. Perhaps, the vaccine reacted and that’s why he flew to Germany. Since there are no many official details, please stay tuned to fameaside for more future updates and interesting news.
