Kylie Jenner is facing backlash – some might say unfairly-so, others might argue that the 22-year-old billionaire’s coronavirus quarantine sees her in relative luxury compared to most. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star took to Instagram on Tuesday with a bikini throwback. The double update proved a hit in terms of likes, but the eyebrow-raising comments centering around COVID-19 didn’t take long to come in.
Kylie’s snaps showed her soaking up the sun as she sat on a wooden chair, appearing to have the crystal-blue ocean waters it was resting on to herself. The makeup mogul had been photographed in a tiny string bikini in patterned red-and-whites, seen looking 100% at peace as she posed with closed eyes and, in the second image, a head raised up towards the sun.
A caption from Kylie gave a nod to her current quarantine status: “Wishing this was me right now,” she wrote.
On the likes front, the update did outstandingly, bringing in over 2.2 million of them in just one hour. Comments sending the Kylie Skin founder the thumbs-up were plentiful – they also included a cheeky “chi chis” compliment from 35-year-old sister Khloe Kardashian. The Good American founder told her sibling that the cleavage display was “incredible.”
Less-flattering remarks were left, though. Opting out of slamming Kylie’s appearance, these messages made a beeline for Kylie’s wealth – the star has also received backlash for showcasing a $450 pair of Louis Vuitton chopsticks while she quarantines.
“Don’t you live in a mansion with a massive pool? A lot more than many have right now,” one fan wrote.
Meanwhile, another took a somewhat-trolling route, writing:
“Sorry coronavirus is inconvenient for you Kylie,” but the user found themselves backed up by fans – one wrote: “It’s inconvenient to everyone.”
A lengthier comment did, however, clock up over 100 likes in one hour.
“People just wish they weren’t homeless/jobless/broke/sick right now. And can’t see their families. Post about important stuff. Ppl that are really struggling like me and all my NYC friends and family that lost their jobs because of hospitality was shut down wish they just had anything…something right now. I’m not a hater and generally like you Kylie but this is just ridiculous.”
Kylie also found herself under pressure to donate towards the relief effort – while the star has encouraged fans to self-distance, she has yet to make a donation announcement.
“Hey love, NYC is really struggling. Maybe do some donations to hospitals, maybe some food to healthcare workers. I’m so scared for my family with multiple pre-existing conditions,” one fan replied.
“Christ bigger picture. There are people cooped up in flats that have no garden, have lost loved ones,” another fan wrote, adding: “You’re quarantined in a mansion. All you’re thinking about is being on the beach sunning yourself. At such an awful time for everyone. What a joke! Talk about me, me, me.”
Kylie’s recent message to fans did plead with them to unite against the virus’ spread. The star delivered a message from the U.S. Surgeon General saying: “Hey guys. Happy self quarantine! I know I’ve already been doing my daily reminders about how important it is right now to practice social distancing and self quarantine. I’m going on my ninth day. The coronavirus is a real thing. I listened to the Surgeon General this morning and even though I’ve already been doing my daily reminders, he definitely encouraged me to come on here and talk to you guys so you can see me and hear me.”
Kylie does not appear to have responded to the backlash. She has, however, been taking to her stories to share her quarantine moments with 2-year-old daughter Stormi Webster. Also quarantined are 39-year-old sister Kim, 40-year-old Kourtney, 24-year-old Kendall, plus “momager” Kris Jenner.
