Kim Kardashian likely didn’t intend to launch a wave of Holocaust-related comments as she took to social media on Friday. The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star updated her Instagram ahead of the weekend with a family photo of her kids in pajamas – all but eldest daughter North West were in the photo.
Kim’s photo showed 4-year-old son Saint, 2-year-old daughter Chicago, and May 2019-born son Psalm looking super-cozy in matching striped pajamas all embellished with personalized lettering showing their names. The black-and-white snap further flew the flag for family vibes by virtue of Saint hugging Psalm, plus Kim’s caption.
“Baby Love,” Kim captioned the image.
While the likes were quick to pour in – over 693,000 were clocked in under an hour – the comments section took an interesting turn as fans likened the striped pajamas to those worn by concentration camp prisoners during The Holocaust.
The World War II genocide that remains one of the most renowned saw an approximate 6 million Jews murdered by the Nazis alongside disabled individuals, blacks, homosexuals, and political prisoners.
“Those look like Auschwitz clothes not trying to be funny should remove this,” one fan wrote.
“Why do they look like Auschwitz clothes” was another comment, with a separate user likening the outfits to Holocaust movie The Boy With The Striped Pajamas.
“They look like cute, little concentration camp prisoners” was yet another comment.
It’s worth noting that plenty of other replies came in as fans gushed over the KKW Beauty founder’s kids, in particular, Chicago – this munchkin was told she looks exactly like her mother.
That said, the Holocaust mentions were marked.
The world has currently been marking the 75th anniversary since the liberation of Poland’s Auschwitz death camp. Elderly survivors have been returning to the site to mark the anniversary, with statistics also emerging showing how few people are aware of Auschwitz – 41% of Americans and 66% of millennials are reported to have never heard of it.
Kim herself has been active in the world of genocide memorial, perhaps not for the Holocaust, but for a genocide that sits close to home for her. Kim has Armenian links by virtue of late father Robert Kardashian. In 2015, Kim and husband Kanye West placed a memorial wreath for the country’s 1915 genocide, also returning to the country with their kids in 2019 to have them baptized.
“For all the flak people give Kim Kardashian, I could say that with her yearly commemorations of the Armenian genocide and spreading that word, she’s been valuable. She’s been great,” Serj Tankian said of Kardashian. The System of a Down frontman is Armenian-American.
Kim herself has shown initiative in raising awareness of the Armenian genocide.
“I have been really passionate about getting people to acknowledge the Armenian genocide,” she said in 2012.
