Israel Gaza conflict: Speaking on the topic, PM Netanyahu revealed air raids to “continue at full force”

Israel’s military actions against the Palestinian Hamas militants in Gaza would not cease but go on “with full force,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated.

“We are acting now, for as long as necessary, to restore calm… It will take time,” Mr. Netanyahu said.

Forty-twenty-two people, including 16 women and ten children, had died due to the latest Israeli airstrikes Gaza officials reported.

Ten people, including two children, have been killed in airstrikes on Israel since Monday, Israel said.

Hamas controlled health ministry gave a total estimated death toll in Gaza at 197 people, including 58 children and 34 women, with 1,235 injured; dozens of militants killed, Israel claims.

Meanwhile, an impromptu emergency gathering has been set up by the UN with international parties trying to negotiate a ceasefire.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres started the meeting by declaring the violent events as “utterly appalling” and should be checked immediately.

Around midnight on Sunday, air raids landed on a busy street in Gaza, which led to three buildings collapsing with dozens killed.

Hamas responded by dropping a barrage of missiles directed at southern Israel overnight and during the afternoon.

Scores of Israelis hurried to bunkers and shelters as the alarms went off. Some Palestinians attempted to take cover, but in the tightly packed and poorly structured Gaza strip, there was nowhere to go.

Speaking to Reuters news, a man Riyad Eshkuntana said he had put his daughters to bed in one of the rooms he thought was safest. However, out of his six daughters, only one survived, with his wife also dying.

“I ran to check up on the girls,” said Mr. Eshkuntana. “My wife jumped. She hugged the girls to take them out of the room; then, a second airstrike hit the room… The ceilings were destroyed, and I was under the rubble.”

Releasing a statement, the Israeli military claimed it had launched strikes on a tunnel system. However, it had not known the tunnel collapsing would cause the building to collapse as well, leading to people’s deaths. They had been targeting leaders and underground routes linked to Hamas, the military says.

They managed to strike the house of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and his brother Muhammad Sinwar, a head of logistics and workforce for transportation.

The associated press news agency reported a high chance the brothers were not present at home when the strikes came in. Gaza relief workers have been attempting to take people out of the debris due to the air raids.

Gaza rescue workers spent the day trying to rescue people from under the debris from the strikes.
