Golden Globes Controversy: Scarlett Johansson Joins Criticism

Avengers star Scarlett Johansson says the body behind the Globes needs "fundamental reform"

Golden globes controversies witness another plus as the popular Avenger star Scarlett Johansson explained that the Globes body needs a critical reform.

Scarlett Johansson has lent her voice to the criticism of the organizers of the Golden Globe Awards over the strategy to bring an end to discrimination.

The body behind the Golden Globe is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), charged with a lack of variety and obscure workings.

The body voted in reforms in the early days of this week to increase its membership.

Several industry stars have gone public to declare that this body needs “fundamental reforms,” and Ms. Johansson is just one of them.

Regarding the profile, only the Oscars are superior to the Golden Globes, but the administration behind it has been charged with discriminatory practices, detaching room for freebies, and several ethical lapses.

There was a leak in February; an expose featured in the Los Angeles Times exposed that no black person is listed among the body’s 87 members who participated in the awards’ election.

Earlier this week, the Golden globe’s Organizers sketched a package of reforms to how it is structured in a process to make the body more extensive.

The steps involve increasing its membership with the primary aim of selecting black members and employing diversity advice. The secrecy of the body and its strict admission rule will also be relaxed.

“Today’s overwhelming vote to reform the Association reaffirms our commitment to change,” said HFPA president Ali Sar in an announcement on Thursday.

A lot of Hollywood stars claimed the plans are not convincing. Scarlett Johansson has been one of the nominees for five Golden Globes. She pleads with others in the industry to boycott the awarding body if it refuses to make any considerable internal changes.

The Avenger star recalled facing “sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment.”

“Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole,” she explained.

Scarlett Johansson’s co-star Mark Ruffalo, who also starred in Avengers, joined her, stating that the HFPA’s reforms were “discouraging” on Friday.

“Now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past,” he said. “Honestly, as a recent winner of a Golden Globe, I cannot feel proud or happy about being a recipient of this award.”
