Draya Michele can’t seem to win. The “Basketball Wives LA” alum and swimwear designer recently shared her restaurant receipt to Instagram as she wrote: “Tip more because our waiter was black and they were just getting back to work.” Draya, 35, added a generous $50 to her Benihaha restaurant bill, making the $102.38 spend a total $152.38 one. She’s now getting dragged out over tipping a waiter more because of the color of his skin.
Draya’s outing was for three. The star, who is raising two black sons and has personally opened up about being a black mother to her 8 million Instagram followers, hit up the L.A. dining joint last week. She shared a tasty-looking rice dish to her stories, then posting the below receipt along with the “tip more” message. The original report of the SavagexFenty ambassador’s outing has since sparked Facebook comments. In short, people are now accusing a black woman of being racist – towards her own race.
“REALLY, because of the color of their skin, YOU tip more. You, are part of the problem.”
The above comment came echoed by other users, with a fan replying: “You are so right! I’m a Black woman 62 this ignorance is the problem! You tip according to SERVICE.”
Draya seemed fresh outta luck as users picked apart her actions. “It’s just about black people? You tip more because he is black? Looks to me like black people are just as racist…” one fan added, with the star also getting heat over her decision to parade around her generosity. “You tipped more because he was Black”? That’s not a racist comment? Humble yourself you gave a $50 tip👏” was a comment seeing one fan unimpressed.

Draya, who has been listing black-owned businesses to support via her stories, was, however, backed by some. “Draya keep shinning on em while they run they mouth you run to the bank Queen 💰😁💯,” a fan wrote. And they wouldn’t be wrong. Draya saved up $12,000 back in 2011 to found her Mint Swim brand. The hugely-popular line that counted Selena Gomez as one of its clients back in 2017 was – that same year – valued at $1 million, with 2019 seeing makeup mogul Kylie Jenner feature Mint Swim during her Turks & Caicos travels.
Draya herself influences for a black-owned business. Her gig as a SavagexFenty ambassador sees her encouraging purchases of 32-year-old singer Rihanna’s lingerie line. The star also recently opened up on Black Lives Matter from a personal perspective. She wrote:
“Knowing racism still exists is one thing, but actually seeing a man pleading for his life is just plain proof (for those who were still in denial about it). As a black woman, mother, and business owner …. it’s important that I do my part in all this to aid in a better/safer/ more kind future for my sons, for your sons as well.”
Draya does not appear to have responded to the backlash. The star has steadily been expanding her empire, with the latest seeing her drop her OHPOLLYxDraya collection. The ex to Orlando Scandrick also continues her KKW Beauty and Fashion Nova influencing. The latter sees Draya hold a partner status.
