Carrie Underwood got straight-up mask shamed this weekend. The 37-year-old “Southbound” singer updated her Instagram on Saturday with a giant shout-out to her brand-new Christmas album – “My Gift” is currently out, it’s all fans can talk about, and the 10-track EP even features Carrie’s 5-year-old son Isaiah.

Carrie’s Instagram update came as the “Find Your Path” author and clothing designer returns to music amid her many ventures. It showed the blonde smiling from behind a black glittery face mask and in the CD aisle at her local Target. Carrie, seen in acid-wash jeans, plus a cute and dark floral top, held a copy of her album in one hand, a Target basket in another, and she kept COVID safe. She also dropped an excited-sounding caption.

As per tradition, had to go buy the CD at the store! As not per tradition, I had to wear a mask! I promise I’m smiling, though! @Target #2020Man #MyGift 🎁✨

The response likely wasn’t what Carrie anticipated. While countless fans gushed over the “Drinking Alone” singer’s release – it’s her first Christmas album – others went straight for the mask, seemingly unimpressed that a celebrity was doing, well, what the CDC says to do.

“I don’t wear mine to Target and neither do the employees. So happy to live in a Red state 💞,” one user proudly wrote.

Carrie, also promptly told to “take off” her mask by one fan, found the Right Wing alive an well as a further user quipped:

“Why did you have to wear a mask? Football players and politicians don’t. You aren’t special and iconic enough to express your civil liberties?”

Carrie has been actively backing movements aimed at minimizing the spread of COVID-19. Back in April, the star, together with former NHL player husband Mike Fisher, delivered a PSA. The 2010-married couple urged fans to social distance, wash their hands, and keep safe amid the pandemic. Mike told fans: “To help the health of our community, we’re asking everyone to stay at home as much as possible and practice social distancing, with Carrie saying: “Working together, we can stop the spread of COVID-19.”

Carrie did, however, see some fans pleased by the mask display. In fact, many, noticing the backlash, jumped in to defend the Grammy winner. A fan claiming to be a Republican also wrote that they are “a nurse, I chose to wear a mask, also I wear a N95 on planes… Seen too many deaths..”

The cotonavirus pandemic, originating in Wuhan, China in late 2019, now sees the United States as the country with the most cases. A sombre milestone was hit this month as the U.S. reached 200,000 COVID deaths. There are currently 7.2 million recorded cases in the country, with today alone bringing 43,000+ new cases.
