Popular sports celebrity asked schools to teach black history to the students. This happened after he figured out that his grandparents were from the Windrush generation. He gave credit to the recent “Black Lives Matter” moment as well. The moment helped drive him to clinch a record-equaling (not breaking) 7th F-1 title in the previous season.
School Children Must Be Taught Black History
Recently, Hamilton was a guest editor for BBC Radio 4’s “Today Programme” on Boxing day. There he said that he wants schools to modify their curriculums to teach more black history. Here are a few words he spoke at that time:
“Growing up in the UK, you learn about white history, simple as. I never learned about black history, I never learned about where my family was from.
My family is from Grenada but my Dad hadn’t really taken me through the history books of where my granddad’s roots started, where my grandparents, [and] great-grandparents were from.”

Here are a few more lines:
We can’t let this movement die a quiet death. We have got to keep it alive but I think the curriculums need to shift finally. And my nieces and nephews, I want them to learn about both of their sides.
The great white history and also, they’re mixed race, so it would be great for them to learn about where their dad’s from and their black history.
We are caught in a trap because our history cannot be told without confronting two things that we in this country do not like to talk about. One is slavery and one is the violence of empire.
Interesting Facts About Lewis Hamilton
- Lewis participated in his 5th world championship at the time of his grandfather’s death back in the year 2018.
- He has earned a reputation as the “Fastest Man on Two Wheels”.
- This 35-years old sports celebrity has recently won the Sports Personality Of The Year. At that time, he spoke a few lines (in favor of black history too):
I had this extra drive in me this year to get to the end of those races.

It was a different drive than what I’ve had in me in the past.
To get to the end of those races first so that I could utilize that platform [for Black Lives Matter] and shine the light as bright as possible.
Conclusion
The recent “Black Lives Matter” moment gave courage to several people (probably from all over the world) to stand against the prejudice that they’ve been facing for generations. Furthermore, Lewis Hamilton seems to be supporting the moment as well. He’s sharing his piece of mind every time he gets an opportunity. Encouraged by the moment, different communities, races, etc. took a stand as well.
It’s not clear if Hamilton is doing all this as a part of a publicity stunt or if that is what he is really concerned about. Whether or not it’s a publicity stunt, one thing is for sure, that he’s probably saying the right thing. Now it’s up to the citizens to favor him or be against him. We can also conclude that teaching black history is not at all a bad thing, and there’s no harm in actually modifying the curriculum as well.
